Competition and Consumer Authority Commemorates World Consumer Rights Day
The Competition and Consumer Authority will host the commemoration of World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) at Lentsweletau on Saturday 14th March.
World Consumer Rights Day, which officially falls on Sunday 15th March 2020, is commemorated annually to raise awareness about consumer rights and unfair business practices which undermine these rights.
Four basic consumer rights are recognised worldwide which are: the right to safety, the right to choose, the right to information and the right to be heard.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is “The Sustainable Consumer”. The UN World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable practices support ecological, human, and economic health and vitality. Simply put, sustainability presumes that resources are finite, and should be used conservatively and wisely.
The theme highlights the impact of climate change and the lifestyle changes that consumers can make to play their part in promoting environmental sustainability. It calls for inclusive action by all including businesses and governments to make sustainability the easy choice for consumers, so that they can reduce consumption of products and services that have an adverse impact on the environment.
Commemoration of this day will draw participation from key stakeholders including consumer groups, the business community, government and local authorities. The Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Honourable Peggy Serame, will give the keynote address at this event.
The people of Lentsweletau and the surrounding areas are invited to come in large numbers at the event which will be held at Lentsweletau Service Centre starting at 8am.
