CCA and BNPC to Sign MoU

The Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA) and the Botswana National Productivity Centre (BNPC) will on Tuesday 10th May 2022 sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU). Members of the Press are invited to the signing ceremony which will take place at the CCA’s offices in Gaborone at 10:00 Hours.

The CCA has been established to prevent, and redress anti-competitive practices in the economy as well as the removal of constraints on the free play of competition in the market. Further, the CCA is the main consumer protection agency in the economy.

The BNPC on the other hand has been established to promote increased productivity in all sectors of the economy and to stimulate and generate productivity consciousness in Botswana. It is charged with responsibilities of representing Botswana in reports that have a bearing on competitiveness including IMD Reports, Productivity Statistics Reports, Global Competitiveness Reports and Doing Business Reports. One of BNPC’s goals is to contribute towards national productivity and competitiveness.

To the extent that the CCA promotes competitiveness not only by investigation and enforcement but by undertaking general studies and analysis across sectors, the mandates of the two organisations intersect. It was upon the realisation that BNPC and CCA have a common goal in promoting competitiveness in the economy that they saw it fit to leverage on each other’s complementarities.

Areas of cooperation shall include, but not limited to; sharing of information of research findings that have a bearing on competitiveness including IMD Reports, Productivity Statistic Reports, Global Competitiveness and Doing Business reports; joint policy briefs and advocacy programmes pertaining to constraints on competition, regional and international competitiveness; joint research activities; co-funding of projects of common interest and stakeholder engagement and public awareness.

A Joint Working Committee (JWC) will be established to operationalise the MoU.
